The Cascades

The intent of this photograph is to illustrate how big these mountains are, and how they rise out of the plains in isolation instead of as part of a range.  As one mountain disappears over the horizon, another is to my right, and another is appearing ahead.

Bumpass Hell, Lassen National Park, California

Mr. Bumpass discovered these thermal features near Lassen Peak by dropping through the thin earth into boiling water.  He lost his legs but gained a geographic name place.  There are boiling springs, mud pots, and fumeroles.  Lassen was the site of eruptions early in the last century.  At the peak, each eruption is distinguished by a different-colored cone.
