Uh, oh... does that look like rain? |
Dempster Highway, somewhere in the NWT.

I had just passed through a stretch of highway composed of marbles 2 to 3 inches thick. As long as I stayed in a tire track left by a previous car, I was OK. Obviously, my speed went way down, and a car wanted to pass. As soon as I left the track, the bike went into a wobble and headed for the ditch. I managed to recover by tearing my eyes away from the ditch, applying power, and sharply countersteering to the left. Ahead was a soft bank of fog. When I entered the fog, my visor misted up and I lost all forward visibility. When I raised the visor, my glasses misted up and I again lost all forward visibility. I ended up looking straight down at my feet to see the road while I coasted to a stop. The only way I could restore vision was by cracking the visor open halfway and dropping my glasses to the bridge of my nose. This opened up a narrow field of view, allowing enough visibility to see about 20 feet ahead. In addition, it was raining and blowing from left to right. Something kept on stinging my face. It was hail. | |||
