Dawson was first mined by placer operations. When the easy gold was gone, large corporations bought out the individual claims and brought in dredges. The dredges moved by digging ahead, allowing the water to fill the new channel, and dumping the gravel spoil sans gold behind. The spoil covers almost the entire valley floor in large heaps.. |
